Messi wants more than accolades
updated 6:11 a.m. ET Oct. 1, 2012
MADRID (Reuters) - Lionel Messi wants to be remembered as a good friend and colleague to his team mates rather than as the best player in the world, the unassuming Argentine said in an interview on Monday.
The 25-year-old Barcelona forward has won three consecutive World Player of the Year awards, and is expected to be in the running for a fourth this year, after scoring an unprecedented 73 goals in all competitions last season.
"I prefer to win titles with the team ahead of individual awards or scoring more goals than anyone else," Messi told Spanish daily EL Pais.
"I am more worried about being a good person than being the best football player in the world. When all this is over, what are you left with?
"When I retire, I hope I am remembered for being a decent guy. I like to score goals but I also like to have friends among the people I have played with."
Messi is expecting the birth of his first child, a boy to be named Thiago, in the next month, but does not seem to have been distracted on the pitch.
He has netted 10 goals in all competitions so far, under Pep Guardiola's former assistant Tito Vilanova.
The relatively unknown Vilanova appears to have settled in to his new role quickly and the side top La Liga after a perfect six wins from six.
Vilanova has been helped by a prior knowledge of many of the players, including Messi, from his time spent working in the famed Barca youth academy 'La Masia'.
"I was pleased with the news that Tito was the replacement for Pep," Messi added. "I have known him since I was a lad.
"Tito was the first person who had faith in me, because at the time I was a substitute or didn't play, and he was the one who made me starter in that category (Under-16s).
"I know him well, he's open. He tells you things to your face without any type of problem, I like this."
Barcelona resume their great rivalry with champions Real Madrid on Sunday, when Jose Mourinho's team visit the Nou Camp in La Liga having already overcome the Catalans in the Spanish Super Cup back in August.
"It's the best feeling to beat Madrid because of the importance attached to it," Messi said of the 'Clasico' as he went on to detail the strengths of their eternal rivals.
"Madrid kill you on the counter-attack," he said. "They have extremely fast forwards, and the link-up between the defence and the attack lasts only five seconds and it is a goal. They don't need to play well to score three against you.
"I am lucky enough to know well (fellow Argentines) Gonzalo Higuain and Angel Di Maria. Higuain isn't in the game, touches the ball twice, and scores two goals. Madrid score goals out of nothing."

A warning message in Google Chrome v22.0
Google wants your Chrome browser safe and therefore discourages users from installing any web apps and extensions that aren?t available in the official Chrome Web Store.
If someone tries to add an unapproved extension (CRX file) or a user-script (*.user.js) in Chrome, the browser will throw a yellow warning message as shown in the above screenshot.
There?s however an easy workaround to this problem.
First download the CRX file of any Chrome extension /web-app to your computer. Then click the Settings icon in Chrome (previously a Wrench icon) and go to Tools -> Extensions. Drag and drop the CRX file on this page and Chrome will gladly install the add-on.
Here?s a video demo illustrating all the steps in detail.?The same technique can be used to install the unofficial Greasemonkey userscripts in Chrome.

Libyans surrender weapons to military authorities
The earlier call by military authorities for civilians to surrender their arms after the fall of Gaddafi did not result in massive turnover until after the violent incident in Benghazi which killed the American ambassador and three of the US Embassy staff.
According to Army Col. Omran al-Warfali, hundreds came early for the turn over of their weapons to the authorities.
"Hundreds of citizens came since the early hours of this morning to handover their weapons from all segments of society, men and youth, women, and even children came to hand over bullets they found it in the streets," he told AP.
In the same AP report, "Moussa Omr, a former fighter who lives on the outskirts of Benghazi and who fought against Gadhafi, said it was time to turn over his weapon to the state."
"When I saw the announcement on television I came to Benghazi with my wife and son to hand over my weapon to the national army because I want to move from the stage of the revolution to state building," he said. "I trust the national army. They have been with us on the frontline and I know them one by one. I don't need this weapon after today, the militias have been expelled from Benghazi and the national army will protect us."
Libya's new government has been struggling to fight criminality as private armed groups continue to patrol the streets but often take the law into their own hands.
Estimates reveal there are at least 200,000 private citizens in Libya who are armed and government has been trying to entice them to surrender their weapons.
Members of the armed groups were offered jobs and money in exchange for their weapons but few have responded to the call by Libya's new leaders.
But recent developments have shown that armed groups have realized the pressing need for lasting peace in their communities.
Some armed group members have offered to join the military under the new regime after surrendering their weapons.
"Saad Bakar, head of a small brigade in Benghazi, handed over rifles and ammunition on Saturday, saying he was ready to disband his group," Reuters wrote.
"We were waiting until today to make sure that the weapons go to the right place," he said. "We want to join the army as individuals."
The organizers of the weapons collection initiative said the campaign will continue in key cities in order to further entice the armed groups to hand over their weapons, they plan to raffle off prizes to include cars at the end of weapons collection day.
