FitBloggin ? Blog Archive ? Live blog: Transition from Blog to Book

In Transition from Blog to Book, bestselling health author Liz Neporent shares the secrets of writing a winning non-fiction book proposal, including how to avoid common rookie mistakes and how to create a pitch package that sells. Liz has published 15 books, with 5 on the best seller list.

Liz started writing in magazines and newspapers, and has since published in Shape, Fitness, NY Times, etc.? When she started, mainstream media was the way to go.? However, now there are a lot of ways to get noticed. Many bloggers are getting books published- if you have a compelling story, good agent, and a good publisher, it?s possible.

For a traditional book proposal, you would go through a publishing house (such as Random House or Penguin).? You need to write a proposal, which is a very specific ?formula? ?which she will share today, and then go to the publishing houses via an agent.

However, if you have a big enough platform or profile, you could explore self-publishing (such as kindle books, ebooks).? In this case, you pay more money up front, but then everything made on the book is yours.? Explore other options to determine if it might work for you.

Lecture Objectives

  1. Learn how to write a proposal
  2. Understand agent fundamentals
  3. Words of advice

Book Proposal Overview

The book proposal is a specific formula which you must follow in order to get published. It includes: One-line Kicker; Overview; Author;? Marketing and PR; Market and Delivery Details; Competitive analysis; Chapter Outlines; and Sample Chapters.

Competitive Analysis: Start here and give a brief, general discussion of your space, 1-2 short paragraphs on 4-8 similar books (2-3 pages total.)? If you can find sales figures for some other research (best seller, etc,) try to quote sales numbers and find books that sold well to help sell your case. NEVER say you?ve never seen anything like this before, this is the ?secret? ? it will go right in the garbage.? The truth is, it has been done before, and publishing houses don?t want to take a chance on something that wasn?t done before.? DO say why yours is different and better.

Author: Always write the competitive analysis first, then go to the author (you) and make it impressive.? Include everything you?ve accomplished in your life, ?along with a small professional head shot, and keep it to 1-3 pages.

Author Marketing and PR:? Your ?platform? includes your blog, twitter numbers, youtube numbers, facebook numbers, any sponsorship opportunities, interaction with your fans, speaking engagements,or anything that shows that you have a high profile (tv, radio, other books).? Explain how these vehicles allow you to market in the future and describe what you have planned for your book.? You may have a series of blogs, series of videos, speaking tour to promote book, or may plan to hire your own publicist to promote the book with your money. (Publishers really like to see that!) This is the most important section in the proposal by far! If they think you can sell it, they will publish it.

Tip: You could reach out to your college/university and the alumni program might put you in the newsletter, tweet you out, invite you to speak, or offer facilities for free. Think creatively but be truthful.

Market/Delivery Details: This should be a quick half page describing who will buy your book. Bloggers have an advantage because you know your unique voice and who your audience is.? Include your word count, generally 40,000-80,000 words for 120-230 pages.? Keep your range to 20,000 words.

Tip: Think through the photos and illustrations and where they come from.? For example, color photos cost more.? It?s better if you own the photos, as it will be your responsibility to find them and pay for them.

Chapter Outlines- Include a table of contents, overall theme, 1-3 paragraphs on each chapter (make it interesting but cover entire chapter- possibly hook in with a mini story).? It?s all about how you prevent it.

Start with the table of contents to think through your order.

Overview: Write the overview last ? keep it exciting and informative.? Explain what it will be about, maybe start with a story or surprising stat, and include who you are and how you?ll sell it, but keep it to 2-3 pages.? It?s challenging to write! Include all the information but also keep it exciting.

One line Kicker- This will be the first item; but think it up last.? It might change at the very end, so think long and hard about it.

Sample Chapter- You have to write at least one chapter.? Don?t write the whole book and don?t submit the whole book.? It?s important to know the ?unwritten rules.? ?Be prepared to scramble and write a second chapter within a few days, if asked.

Other: Make it pretty!? Put it in a pdf template.? Find three people to read and critique it, and get honest feedback.? The process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to six months. You also absolutely need an agent: without one, it?s much less likely to be read by a publisher.

Advice:

1)????? Learn to love, accept and embrace criticism! Editors don?t have time to ?stroke your ego? ? they?ll give it to you straight. Find out what?s wrong so you can fix it.? No just means not right now? so just keep going.? If you really believe in what you?re doing, you?ll find a way to do it.

2)????? Sometimes you can be so in love with what you do or say but it may not actually go anywhere. You may need to ?shoot the baby?- you have to let it go.

Finally, Liz has a new fitness book coming out that she has worked on with Jessica Smith, and it?s coming out Oct 15, 2012- Ten Minute Increments on Getting Fit!

Mauled N.Y. man: I wanted 'to be one with the tiger'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Before his now-infamous tangle with a Bronx Zoo tiger, David Villalobos adorned his Facebook page with New Age odes to Mother Earth and affirmations like, "Be love and fearless."

Police said Saturday that Villalobos had told detectives that it was without fear that he leaped from an elevated train into the animal's den. His reason, they said, was that "he wanted to be one with the tiger."

Villalobos also recounted how, after he landed on all fours, the 400-pound beast attacked him and dragged around by his foot, said New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne. Despite serious injuries, he claimed he was able to get his wish and pet the tiger ? a male Siberian named Bashuta ? before his rescue, the spokesman added.

Based on those admissions and a complaint from the zoo, police were planning to arrest the hospitalized Villalobos on trespassing charges, Browne said. It was unclear when that would happen or if the 25-year-old real estate agent had an attorney; attempts to reach relatives on Saturday were unsuccessful.

Villalobos' big-cat exploits Friday afternoon were an instant tabloid sensation: A front page New York Post story on Saturday was headlined "MAULED!" The Daily News countered with "ZOO-ICIDE," speculating a death wish.

Police had said earlier that Villalobos admitted to a police officer at the scene that he made a conscious decision to jump ? "Everyone has a reason for what they do in life," he was quoted as saying ? but that his motives were murky and an arrest uncertain.

That changed when, during a follow-up interview Saturday, Villalobos told detectives that "his leap was definitely not a suicide attempt, but a desire to be one with the tiger," Browne said.

Villalobos remained hospitalized with bites and punctures on his arms, legs, shoulders and back, and a broken arm and a leg caused by the jump.

The Wild Asia exhibit that's home to the tiger was operating as usual on Saturday, zoo officials said, declining to comment further.

Villalobos' Facebook page makes clear his infatuation with wildlife. One of several postings from Thursday was a photo of a tiger licking a cub, and the comment, "Nice." Another was of a black jaguar.

An earlier post displayed a promo for a movie called "Facing Animals," a Dutch documentary about "the complex and often bizarre relationship between man and animal."

His comment: "This looks fascinating."

Villalobos' own bizarre encounter began with a ride on the elevated train that takes unrestrained visitors over the Bronx River and through a forest, where they glide along the top edge of a fence past elephants, deer and a tiger enclosure. He and a date had taken in the same sights from the monorail during a visit to the zoo about two weeks ago, police said Saturday.

This time without warning, Villalobos apparently jumped out of his train car and cleared the 16-foot-high perimeter fence. He was alone with Bashuta for about 10 minutes before he was rescued by zoo officials, who used a fire extinguisher to chase the animal away.

The zookeepers instructed to roll under an electrified wire to get to safety, Breheny said. They then called the tiger into a holding area.

The Bronx Zoo, one of the nation's largest zoos, sprawls over 265 acres and contains hundreds of animals, many in habitats meant to resemble natural settings. Its exhibits include Tiger Mountain, Congo Gorilla Forest and World of Reptiles.

There are 10 tigers at the Wild Asia exhibit, but the 11-year-old Bashuta was the only one on display at the time. Zoo officials said he would remain in the rotation.

"When someone is determined to do something harmful to themselves, it's very hard to stop that," said zoo director Jim Breheny. "The tiger did nothing wrong."

Motorola feels Droid Bionic owners' pain, promises to fix things

With a star-crossed history that includes a lengthy delay, mysterious sounds and other issues, Motorola's Droid Bionic has had a bit of a checkered past. Motorola, however, is apparently aware of Droid Bionic owners' woes and is working on a plan to make things right. At least that's what Punit Soni, VP of Product at Motorola Mobility, is promising owners of the device on his Google+ page. Faced with complaints ranging from the Bionic's locked bootloader to its delayed ICS update, a contrite Soni admitted that Droid Bionic owners got a "raw deal" and promised their feedback "will not fall on deaf ears." He then said that the company has a plan for the device and that he is "currently solidifying things to ensure we can publish it, commit and follow up." Soni did not provide specifics on what those plans are though you have to admit that the guy's candor about the Bionic's issues is refreshing. In the meantime, the phone's ICS upgrade is now slated to roll out in Q4. Bionic owners who want to add their proverbial two cents to the conversation can hit up the source link below.

DNR's Weekly UP Fishing Report | Sports & Recreation | UP ...

No reports were provided for the western UP this week.

Keweenaw Bay: ?Has good coho fishing along the east shoreline, off the mouth of the Falls River, the L?Anse Township Park and between Sand Point and Carla?s.? Most are trolling 35 to 55 feet down in 40 to 70 feet.? The Falls River is low and clear so no fish were seen.? Lake trout and coho were caught in Traverse Bay when trolling off Hermits Cove, Gay Point and Big Louie?s Point when trolling a foot or two off the bottom in waters 70 to 160 feet deep.

Chocolay River:? Reported good catches of coho salmon. ?

Marquette: ?A few boats were out fishing for salmon and lake trout but windy conditions prevented boats from heading out several miles to fish.? Fish were stacked up near the end of the Lower Harbor breakwall.?

Carp River:? Anglers were starting to catch a few salmon with Cleo?s, stick baits or crawlers.?

Menominee:? Walleye fishing was good in 25 to 30 feet of water both north and south of the Cedar River.? Anglers are using crawler harnesses then switching to Reef Runners or Thundersticks after dark.? Walleye were caught around Green Island and off the mouth of the Menominee River in 15 to 30 feet of water.? Try large stick baits.?

Menominee River: ?Boat anglers caught walleye but most of the fish were sub-legal.? They are trolling crawler harnesses or casting crank baits.? Rock bass, smallmouth bass and freshwater drum were also caught.? Shore anglers fishing near the Hattie Street Dam caught panfish on crawlers, wax worms or minnows.?

Cedar River:? A few smallmouth bass were caught on crawlers. ??

Little Bay De Noc: ?Walleye anglers were fishing around the mouth of the Escanaba River and out to the ?Black Bottom? when trolling or drifting crawler harnesses in 18 to 30 feet of water.? Very few fish were caught off the Kipling Flats, the Narrows and off the Terrace Bay Inn.? Perch fishing was fair to good in 10 to 23 feet of water off Kipling.? Both the Ford and the Day?s River had low water levels and few fish.?

Big Bay De Noc:? Has fair to good smallmouth bass action around Garden Bluff when casting or drifting crawlers, crank baits or plastics in waters 10 to 38 feet deep.? The Nahma Boat Launch is now closed for dredging.? The Garden Launch would be best for those looking to head out to the areas where most of the fishing takes place this time of year.?

Munising: ?Boat anglers are now targeting coho but catch rates were slow.? No lake trout were reported this week.? Surface water temperatures were in the low to mid 60?s but could drop quickly with the cold front.? Pier angling activity continues to increase slowly as catch rates for coho and splake are improving slowly.? Some are still-fishing with spawn bags while others are casting spoons or spinners.?

Grand Marais: ?Few anglers were out and those trolling in the bay only had a few strikes.? Those surfcasting had no luck.?

St. Mary?s River:? Water levels are at an all-time low as the Great Lakes have receded.? Some are having trouble launching their boats.? A good number of pink salmon were in the river.? For walleye, the best reports are coming from Raber Bay off Antelope Point in 12 to 14 feet of water.? Use crawler harnesses with purple and red beads and bottom bouncers along the weed beds.? Also try crank baits as we move further into fall as the walleye appetite changes as water temperatures drop. ??

Detour:? Pink salmon are still being caught at the lighthouse when trolling orange and gold spoons 35 to 50 feet down in 80 feet of water.? Lake trout are hitting just off the bottom in 70 to 90 feet of water.? Chartreuse and white spoons were the ticket.? A couple chinook were caught north of the ferry boat lane that runs to Drummond Island.? Try raspberry and black spoons or J-plugs.?

Cedarville and Hessel:? Perch fishing has picked up along the east end of Hessel Bay, Musky Bay, Snows Channel and the Middle Entrance.? Perch were also caught along the east end of Cedarville Bay in 6 to 8 feet of water.? Pike and smallmouth bass have been caught in good numbers.?

Carp River:? Has a high number of pink salmon along with some chinook at the mouth.? Some salmon have moved upstream.? Try little Cleo?s, spoons or spawn.?

St. Ignace: ?Salmon are still present in 50 to 70 feet of water.

Friday Favorites ? Surprise Baby Shower | my kitchen addiction

I?ve been taking a bit of a break from my Friday Favorites lately? My regular Friday Favorites will return later this fall (post-baby!). But, lately I just haven?t had the time and energy to get through my RSS reader each week. I suppose being close to 9 months pregnant is a good excuse, but I do really miss reading everyone?s posts each week.

This week, however, I had to put together a quick post to say thank you to all of the amazing bloggers who pulled together to throw me a surprise virtual baby shower yesterday. I?am so lucky to have so many great friends out there, and I was certainly reminded of that fact as I read through everyone?s blog posts!

My day yesterday started pretty normally? Yellowdog decided to throw a tantrum about 30 minutes before the alarm was going to go off because she wanted attention??And breakfast.? Yes, having a yellow lab is good preparation for having a baby in the house.? So, when we couldn?t ignore the whining any longer, the hubby and I?pulled ourselves out of bed, got the doggy her breakfast, and then took her for her morning walk. I had left my phone on the dining room table when we left for our walk, so I picked it up to double check to make sure I didn?t have any missed calls or text messages when I got home. That?s when I saw all of the tweets.

I scrolled through all of the notifications on my phone and finally realized what was going on? There was a virtual baby shower? For me! I was floored. I wasn?t expecting it at all, and I couldn?t believe how many people had taken the time to write a blog post?to celebrate the little baby that will be here soon. I started to tear up a bit, and immediately ran (ok, waddled?) to turn on my computer so that I could read through everything on a?regular-sized screen.

As I went through all of the posts, more and more tears came? I was blown away by all of the sweet words, well wishes, and fabulous recipes. I have always loved the?way the food blogging community is so tightly knit, and, much to my surprise, I was suddenly the one on the receiving end of all of the love.?I spent the morning reading everyone?s posts?and trying to find the words to appropriately describe how I felt.? I never quite found the words, and I still haven?t.

The best I can do is to extend my heartfelt thanks for everyone?s love and support. I never expected that my little food blog would lead to all of this, and I am blessed to have so many great friends as a result.? So, today I wanted to pass along the links to all of the blog posts that were a part of the virtual shower. I hope that you will help me in extending my thanks? Plus, there are a lot of great recipes that you won?t want to miss!
