ARM's CortexA50 chips promise 3x performance of current superphones by 2014, throw in 64bit for good measure

We knew this was coming, not least because someone let the cat out of the bag (or at least a paw) last night. Nevertheless, it's only today that we're getting the full picture of ARM's "clean sheet" v8 architecture, and you know what? It's pretty astounding. Top billing goes to the Cortex-A57, which is said to deliver "three times the performance of today's top smartphones" without guzzling any additional power. Alternatively, the chip could be designed to deliver the same performance as a current smartphone or tablet but make the battery last five times as long -- which would make that Surface RT just about five times nicer than it is already. How's all this possible? Read on for more.

The company said in a release it cut service to two areas. The first is bounded by Frankfort Street to the north; William Street to the west; Wall Street to the south; and the East River. The second area is bounded by Broadway to the west; Wall Street to the north; and the southern tip of Manhattan.

The areas, some of which had already been evacuated, include about 6,500 customers.?Con Edison?said that, as of 7 p.m. Eastern time there were more than 156,000 customers in New York City and?Westchester County?without power due to Hurricane Sandy.

Sea water from Hurricane Sandy's storm surge threatened to flood the underground electrical equipment, prompting the shutdown,?Con Edison?said.

The company will have to wait for flood waters to recede before workers can enter some facilities to assess damage, Con Edison said.

As equipment is inspected and determined safe to energize, the company said the highest priority for restoration will go to critical customer facilities that have an impact on the general public such as mass transit, hospitals, police and fire stations, and sewage and water-pumping stations.

Con Edison?said workers continue to monitor underground electrical delivery equipment in other areas of Manhattan south of 36th Street, along with section of Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, for flooding and possible shutdowns.

A few hours before the power shutdown, the company notified customers through an automated calling system that their power might be shut off.

"We wanted to let people know in and around these areas that there may be disruption to their service,"?Con Edison?spokesman?Alfonso Quiroz?told Reuters.

More than 760,000 Con Ed customers in NYC still without power

(Reuters) - New York power company Consolidated Edison Inc said Wednesday it had restored power to over 160,000 of the 930,000 total customers knocked out by Hurricane Sandy, leaving about 764,000 still without power.

Sandy hit the U.S. East Coast Monday night and left almost 8.5 million homes and businesses without power in 21 states from North Carolina to Maine and as far west as Illinois, which surpassed the 8.4 million customers left in the dark by Hurricane Irene last year.

Sandy knocked out power to about 30 percent of Con Edison's more than three million power customers in New York City and Westchester County.

Con Edison said Sandy was the largest storm-related outage in its history. The previous record was the more than 200,000 customers affected by Hurricane Irene in 2011.

On Tuesday, Con Edison estimated that customers in Brooklyn and Manhattan served by underground electric equipment should have power back within four days.

Restoration to all customers in other areas served by overhead power lines will take at least a week.

Last night, the company said it had to cut power to about 160,000 customers in southern Brooklyn and central Staten Island due to Sandy-related problems on high-voltage systems supplying electricity to those areas.

The company also said it reduced voltage to several neighborhoods in Brooklyn by 8 percent last night as workers address the problem.

Officials at Con Edison were not immediately available to say where most of the outages were Wednesday morning. On Tuesday, the company said about 250,000 customers in Manhattan, 180,000 in Westchester County, 108,000 in Queens, 109,000 in Staten Island, 87,000 in Brooklyn, and 45,000 in the Bronx were without power. Presidential race rained out even in sunny states

DENVER (AP) ? Crista Laughlin was a mile high and dry, but Superstorm Sandy still kept the 40-year-old Obama campaign volunteer from walking precincts or working the phones.

Instead, she was huddled inside her suburban Denver home, watching storm coverage on television and thinking about her grandson in Norfolk, Va., in the hurricane's path. "I'm actually with the president on this one: The election will take care of itself in a week. What's on our minds is the people," said Laughlin, a 40-year-old volunteer in Aurora, Colo.

The presidential election was, well, rained out Monday ? from the media centers and storm-battered battleground states of the Atlantic coast to the arid, high plains suburbia of Colorado. Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan canceled three Colorado appearances scheduled for Tuesday as the Romney's campaign announced it was suspending political events featuring the top of its ticket. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama scrapped his own Tuesday appearances ? including one in Colorado ? and fled a Monday morning rally in Florida to make it back to the White House before the storm.

The president's campaign emailed supporters urging them to donate to charities that help storm victims. In Romney campaign offices, volunteers cut into their phone-banking and door-knocking time to stockpile canned goods to send to the disaster zone. The storm gave Obama a chance to appear presidential during a national emergency, and challenger Mitt Romney a potential opening should the federal government botch the response.

It also had a political impact thousands of miles away, giving people like Roger Draeger a break.

The 75-year-old funeral driver from Fort Atkinson, Wis., is a Romney supporter, but he was glad both candidates suspended their campaigns Monday. It was a blessed reprieve from the nonstop political debate that has dominated Wisconsin since Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill limiting collective bargaining for state workers last year, triggering a long series of recall elections.

Still, like other residents of this poll-obsessed nation, Draegar quickly began to analyze the upsides and downsides for each candidate, saying both should be visible in the aftermath. Obama "really needs to show a lot of compassion for all those states and cities," he said.

It's a sign of how thoroughly the campaign has permeated swing-state life that Dan Guimond, 61, an economist in Denver, was partly getting his hurricane updates through the political-junkie website Real Clear Politics and The New York Times blog FiveThirtyEight. Guimond is worried about his parents, who live in Massachusetts, but not worried about how the storm could affect the race. "Obama canceled his, what, 26th trip to Colorado? Big deal," he said.

A modicum of politics still continues here. Former President Bill Clinton and Jill Biden, the vice president's wife, were still slated to campaign in Colorado on Tuesday, and the Romney campaign sent the candidate's son Craig to an early vote event Monday afternoon. The president, notably, is scheduled to return to Colorado Thursday. Still, some of his supporters said they may not be able to do as much for him.

Romney's wife, Ann, will help gather donations at campaign offices in Wisconsin and Iowa Tuesday before a Des Moines, Iowa, rally. The Romney campaign also announced Ryan will drop by a donation drive in Wisconsin.

Denver Pastor Leon Emerson, head of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, spent the weekend rallying voters for Obama with actor Laurence Fishburne. But he expects Sunday talks at church to focus less on the upcoming election and more on the storm.

"I'll eventually talk about the election, but I may not put as much emphasis on it, depending how this hurricane turns out," Emerson said. "Politics is one thing, but you know what? We're going to keep our attention on helping mankind."

Emerson said his congregation is shifting focus, too.

"We had some plans today and tomorrow, going door to door. It's still going on, but not with the intensity we had, because people want to make sure their loved ones are OK," said Emerson, who has a niece in Hampton, Va.

Some weary swing state voters didn't think the political lull would mean much. "I'm sure the TV commercials aren't going to stop," said Mike Beauregard, a Republican-leaning Independent who owns a cooking utensil shop in Concord, NH.

Others were fixated on images of the storm but still saw the devastation through the prism of the election. In western Wisconsin, at the bustling student union at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, a television tuned to cable news showed ominous images of the storm. History major Mike Engelhardt, 21, said Obama had the most on the line.

"If he bungles the beginning of the cleanup, that will move a lot of votes to Romney," Engelhardt predicted.

One place the storm may have an impact is North Carolina, where Democrats are hoping new voters who cast their ballots early will overcome the GOP's traditional Election Day advantage at the polls. Rain from the storm shuttered some early voting locations Sunday, and election officials were concerned that heavy snow in the western mountains could make it even harder to get to polling places early.

"The weather could chill participation," state election executive director Gary Bartlett said.

Democrats are counting on running up an edge in early votes in other swing states as well ? ones that lie outside the storm's path but were still on the minds of Romney supporters in sunny Davenport, Iowa, where the Republican candidate made a final Monday afternoon appearance.

Tim Vath of Dubuque said he didn't think the storm would fundamentally disrupt the election. But he did worry that any bad weather now might increase the magnitude of any early-voting advantage Democrats might have.

"Perhaps it could freeze that advantage in place. I doubt it would determine the outcome in those states," said Vath. "At least, I hope not."

As Sandy rumbled past the tiny Chesapeake Bay hamlet of North, Va., William Sullivan, 76, swung by the town's main building, which holds the post office, bait shop and convenience store. Sullivan trashed two-thirds the mail stuffing his post office box, mainly glossy political brochures from both sides.

"Makes me sick to my stomach thinking of the millions of dollars these characters have spent to get elected," Sullivan said before heading back out into the rain. He doubted the dramatics surrounding the storm would change the minds of his rural neighbors. "People have their minds made up," he said.

In downtown Denver, it was sunny and in the 60s as Jeremy LeVal, a Romney supporter, waited at a bus stop. He confessed he has paid limited attention to both the campaign and the storm. He knew the hurricane was bearing down on the Northeast and hoped there was no major damage, but doubted the brief suspension of the presidential contest would matter.

"If people haven't decided at this point," LeVal said, "it probably won't make a difference."

Nature slams campaigns into real world

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Suddenly, after drifting through months of confusing finger-pointing and iffy economic theory, the presidential candidates are getting walloped by an all-too-tangible October surprise. Superstorm Sandy is a real-world, gut-level test.

The force of nature threw cold water on the campaign bickering just as President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney were charging into a final week of man-made rancor.

"It's sort of like Mother Nature is intervening and calling a timeout," said historian and presidential biographer Douglas Brinkley.

Obama can't afford to be caught taking his eyes off an unfolding crisis. Romney needs to avoid appearing callous about the lives lost and homes flooded; he's decided to go on with campaign events but dialed down the politics Tuesday.

Seven years after Hurricane Katrina, neither candidate wants to talk about the political implications of the storm that lurched up the East Coast and left millions without power.

But their campaigns have to think about it. All presidential teams sweat about the potential for an October surprise ? a late-in-the race event or disclosure that can turn the race upside down. And there's never been one quite like this.

While Obama canceled his campaign appearances from Monday at least through Wednesday, Romney wavered. First the campaign said Romney would skip a Kettering, Ohio, rally Tuesday out of sympathy for the storm victims. Then he decided to do the event but recast it as a storm-relief effort, shorn of the usual campaign speech.

"It's part of the American spirit, the American way, to give to people in need," Romney told supporters in Kettering before they lined up to hand him bags of canned food for storm victims.

Romney planned three campaign events in Florida on Wednesday.

The storm's political impact is still unknown. At the very least, the aftermath in New York City and elsewhere will dominate the news and distract a nation of voters during the crucial handful of days that remain before Nov. 6.

More concrete effects on Election Day are yet to be tallied: how many early voting days lost, how many voters who don't make it to the polls because of power outages, damaged homes or cleanup duties, whether any polling places or election equipment are damaged. Parts of four states seen as pivotal to this election were hit ? North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Though rapid-fire campaign ads continue apace, Brinkley, a Rice University professor, predicted that the presidential race's less-strident tone will continue through its remaining week, even after campaign schedules return to full strength.

"When the nation's largest city and even its capital are endangered, when so many people are in peril and face deprivation," Brinkley said Monday, "it's hard to get back to arguing over taxes."

For Obama, the federal response to the natural disaster could make or break his bid for a second term. Romney risks losing momentum in his push to move ahead in the few tight state races expected to decide the election.

"It stops the campaign more or less dead in its tracks," said Republican pollster and strategist Mike McKenna, who doesn't work for the Romney campaign. "A pause always helps the guys on defense. It helps the Obama guys catch their breath a little bit and think about what to do next."

McKenna says Romney shouldn't take much time off and should instead focus on key states outside the storm zone.

"If I were Romney, I'd be in Colorado and Michigan and Wisconsin," McKenna said. "Start off with a prayer for the people in New York and New Jersey, definitely do that, but don't stop attacking. Try to keep your momentum through this."

For Obama, missing a few days of active campaigning for vital presidential duties may be a good trade, politically speaking.

Lingering anger about the previous president's performance when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans provides a backdrop that will benefit Obama if his administration does a solid job, said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center.

"You gain much more as a president being contrasted with George W. Bush and Hurricane Katrina then you do giving a speech in some battleground state and getting on the evening news as a campaigner," Jamieson said.

She said a natural disaster gives a sitting president "unlimited access to the media to say things the public wants and needs to hear in a fashion that reinforces that he is president."

The 2008 election also was hit by a fall surprise, albeit one of human creation? the plummeting stock market and near collapse of the nation's financial sector that September. Many voters blamed that on the Republicans in power, and it helped Obama capture the presidency.

This time, neither candidate can be accused of failing to prevent the weather. But Obama's reputation will suffer if the federal government's response is feeble or botched.

With Election Day a week away, there may be little time to make such assessments, however, and a risk of appearing to politicize tragedy if Romney speaks up too soon ? a complaint that Democrats lodged against him when a U.S. Consulate in Libya was attacked.

"Criticism could boomerang if it appears to be ginned up to win votes in the election as opposed to genuine concern that people were not protected or people were not helped," said Mitchell McKinney, a professor of political communication at the University of Missouri.

For the former Massachusetts governor, with no political office as a platform, finding a strong, positive role in the storm response is difficult. Romney used a campaign event Monday at a high school gym in Avon Lake, Ohio, to make a plea for donations to the Red Cross. His campaign offices in storm-hit areas were collecting emergency supplies.

Even as Obama canceled an appearance in Florida on Monday and rushed back to Washington to oversee the storm response, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden kept campaigning.

"In times of crisis, we all pull together as one American family," Mrs. Obama told supporters at a campaign event in Iowa City, Iowa, before launching into an upbeat summation of her husband's accomplishments and goals.

The president and Romney also spoke of Americans helping each other.

"President Obama is doing the right thing. Romney, too," said Democratic Party strategist Donna Brazile. "Most Americans know what the closing arguments are by now. Let's focus on taking care of each other."

Solar Investing Made Easy? | The Energy Collective

We have enough solar resources in the United States to power the whole country many times over. And yet, most of us are still not getting our power from the sun. Even with?leases making solar affordable?for more people, many others are still left out of the equation ? including low-income families, renters, and nonprofits.

Crowdfunding a solar project

But what if you own your own house and can afford solar, yet your roof is just not suitable for it? That was the case for residents of University Park, Maryland, a town known for its forest of shade trees. Residents of this middle-class community were interested in solar power but didn?t want to cut down their trees. They had the resources to invest in solar, but nowhere to put it.

So a group of residents, led by David Brosch, got together to explore other options. They found a church in their community with plenty of sun, whose pastor and membership liked the idea of solar. Not only would it save the church money on their power bills ? it would also support their passion for stewardship of the earth.

The Church of the Brethren and part of the group who made the project happen

The Church of the Brethren and part of the group who made the project happen, being interviewed by a reporter from Marketplace

This was just the beginning of what turned into a 2-year project. After a lot of hard work ? including getting legal advice from interested community members, forming the?University Park Community Solar LLC, and meeting with the state?s SEC commissioner ? in May 2010, a 99-panel solar PV system was installed on the Church of the Brethren.

The church is saving money ? what?s in it for the rest of the community? The benefits are many. Producing solar energy partially offsets the payments everyone makes to the local power company, thereby reducing energy costs for the community. And investors can know they?re helping preserve the environment for everyone, even if not from their own roofs, as well as providing an educational opportunity for their children and a financing model that can be used elsewhere.

That?financing model?has provided an excellent return on investment, one that?s hard to come by these days. Community members were able to invest more than what is normally allowed in this kind of project ? they put in an average of $4,000 each ? and that fully funded installation of the $130,000 system. Investors are getting annual returns of 7% ? 8% over the life of the project, with their investment fully recouped after 8 years.

Easing restrictions to investing

Given these numbers, why haven?t we seen more projects like this one?

Probably the biggest hurdle is securities laws. The laws that are in place to protect the ?unsophisticated? investor also make it tricky to fund these projects. In fact, the University Park group had to get an exemption to Maryland securities law. They couldn?t advertise directly and had to keep their pool of investors to 35. And investors had to be Maryland residents.

The good news is that these restrictions are starting to ease up, and that could change the funding landscape significantly.

Evan Wynns, founder of the?San Francisco Energy Cooperative, currently solicits investments of up to $250 to fund green energy projects in the community. To avoid SEC restrictions, he can?t ask for much more than that.

He?s hoping that will change when the?JOBS Act, a crowdfunding bill that allows average citizens to invest in startup companies, goes into effect (though signed into law in April 2012, the JOBS Act requires that the?SEC write rules?on various aspects of the law). That could allow anyone with enough funds to make larger investments ? in a relatively low-risk area with good returns.

And that helps all of us. Those who do have enough resources to invest in solar can put their money into something that directly helps those who don?t ? as was the case with the Church of the Brethren. There are bound to be more opportunities. So get your checkbook ready, and let?s all work together to make solar available for everyone!

SAN DIEGO An extreme body mass index or high waist-to-hip ratio, both measures of body fat, increased risk for mortality among patients with breast cancer, but this association varied by race/ethnicity, according to recently presented data.

Marilyn L. Kwan, Ph.D., a research scientist in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, Calif., presented these results at the Fifth AACR Conference on The Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held here Oct. 27-30, 2012.

Prior research has shown racial/ethnic differences in survival after a breast cancer diagnosis, particularly among non-Latina whites and African-Americans, according to Kwan. However, reasons for these differences in survival are not clear, and researchers have hypothesized that body size at the time of breast cancer diagnosis might play a role.

"The majority of studies among primarily non-Latina white populations on obesity before a diagnosis of breast cancer have found that increased weight is associated with poorer survival, yet few studies have examined if this association holds true within the major minority groups of African-Americans, Latinas and Asians and whether differences in obesity might explain racial/ethnic differences in survival," Kwan said.

She and her colleagues collected data from 12,025 female patients with breast cancer from the California Breast Cancer Survivorship Consortium. Body mass index (BMI) information was available for 11,351 women including 6,044 non-Latina whites, 1,886 African-Americans, 1,451 Asian-Americans, 1,864 Latinas and 106 others.

"Overall, we found that patients with breast cancer who were underweight, extremely obese or had high levels of abdominal body fat had the worst survival," Kwan said.

In fact, those women classified as underweight had a 47 percent increased risk for overall mortality compared with normal-weight women. Women classified as morbidly obese had a 43 percent increased risk for overall mortality. In addition, women with the highest waist-to-hip ratio (highest level of abdominal fat) had a 30 percent increased risk for overall mortality and a 36 percent increased risk for breast cancer mortality compared with those with the smallest waist-to-hip ratios.

When looking further at mortality within racial/ethnic groups, the researchers found that associations differed by race/ethnicity.

"Among non-Latina white women, being underweight and morbidly obese at breast cancer diagnosis was associated with worse survival, yet this relationship was not found in the other racial/ethnic groups," Kwan said. "Instead, African-American women and Asian-American women with larger waist-to-hip ratios had poorer survival, an observation not seen in non-Latina white women and Latina women."

Latina women had an elevated risk for mortality only among those considered morbidly obese. According to Kwan, this study supports the common lifestyle recommendation to maintain a healthy weight throughout life, but she pointed out that the long-term impact of weight on survival after breast cancer might not be the same in all patients.

About the American Association for Cancer Research

Founded in 1907, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is the world's first and largest professional organization dedicated to advancing cancer research and its mission to prevent and cure cancer. AACR membership includes more than 34,000 laboratory, translational and clinical researchers; population scientists; other health care professionals; and cancer advocates residing in more than 90 countries. The AACR marshals the full spectrum of expertise of the cancer community to accelerate progress in the prevention, biology, diagnosis and treatment of cancer by annually convening more than 20 conferences and educational workshops, the largest of which is the AACR Annual Meeting with more than 17,000 attendees. In addition, the AACR publishes seven peer-reviewed scientific journals and a magazine for cancer survivors, patients and their caregivers. The AACR funds meritorious research directly as well as in cooperation with numerous cancer organizations. As the scientific partner of Stand Up To Cancer, the AACR provides expert peer review, grants administration and scientific oversight of team science and individual grants in cancer research that have the potential for near-term patient benefit. The AACR actively communicates with legislators and policymakers about the value of cancer research and related biomedical science in saving lives from cancer.

Body size and racial/ethnic differences in breast cancer survival. Marilyn L. Kwan1, Bette J. Caan1, Valerie S. Lee1, Esther M. John2, Scarlett Lin Gomez2, Salma Shariff-Marco2, Theresa H. Keegan2, Allison W. Kurian3, Leslie Bernstein4, Yani Lu4, Iona Cheng5, Kristine R. Monroe6, Richard Sposto6, Cheryl Vigen6, Anna H. Wu6. 1Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland, CA, 2Cancer Prevention Institute of California, Fremont, CA, 3Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, 4City of Hope, Duarte, CA, 5University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI, 6University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.

Background: Studies of body size and breast cancer prognosis have primarily been conducted in non-Latina White women with little research to date in racial/ethnic minority groups. We investigated body size (body mass index [BMI], waist-hip-ratio [WHR], waist-height-ratio [WHtR], waist circumference [WC]) and survival by race/ethnicity (non-Latina White, African American, Asian American, and Latina) in the California Breast Cancer Survivorship Consortium (CBCSC).

Methods: The CBCSC represents 12,025 breast cancer patients diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer from 1993-2007 from six California-based studies of breast cancer etiology or prognosis. Data on body size, race/ethnicity, and relevant covariates previously collected from in-person interview or mailed questionnaire were harmonized and pooled. Clinical characteristics and mortality information were obtained from the California Cancer Registry. Body size measures included minimum 6 months pre-diagnosis BMI in kg/m2 (underweight

Results: Among 11,351 women with BMI data (6,044 non-Latina Whites, 1,886 African Americans, 1,451 Asian Americans, 1,864 Latinas, and 106 others), a total of 2,744 deaths (1,445 BC-related) were observed after a mean (SD) follow-up of 11.0 (3.8) years. Underweight and morbidly obese women had a statistically significant increased risk of overall mortality compared to normal-weight women (underweight HR=1.47; 95% CI: 1.13, 1.90 and morbidly obese HR=1.43; 95% CI: 1.16, 1.77; p for trend=0.012; departure from linearity p=0.005) while obese and severely obese women had borderline significant increased risks. Similar yet attenuated associations were found for BC mortality. Women in the highest WHR quartile compared to those in the lowest quartile had a significant increased risk of both overall death (HR=1.30; 95% CI: 1.10, 1.55) and BC death (HR=1.36; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.73) with a positive trend of larger WHR and increasing risk (p for trend

Conclusion: In this large, multiethnic study of breast cancer patients, we found that those with extreme BMI and increased WHR had the worse survival but that the associations varied by race/ethnicity. Obesity and body fat distribution around breast cancer diagnosis appear to have differential effects on survival depending on race/ethnicity.

Shas? solution to the party?s leadership crisis, the forum of three, has earned an envious spot in the weekly chareidi newspapers and magazines in Eretz Yisrael. Shas? own Yom L?Yom does not play modest, allocating significant real estate to tell the story and share the success, including the array of rabbonim whose photo appears alongside their bracha on the success achieved by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. The paper actually explains in depth that the credit for saving the party goes to Maran?s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav David Yosef, who heads the gadol hador?s Badatz Beit Yosef.

Rav Moshe?s efforts paid off big time in this case, at least for the time being, and the rabbonim who appear in the party-affiliated newspaper are not just Sephardim but prominent Ashkenazim including the Sanzer Rebbe Shlita, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yonah Yechiel Metzger.

The Shas success begs the question if the Ashkenazim can achieve the same success, but with growing splits in the litvish and chassidic factions, such a reality appears unlikely at the present time.

Emergency Preparedness and Food Allergies - Not Missing a Thing!

So, Hurricane Sandy is headed straight for our area and it has me thinking . . . are we prepared? ?Preparing for emergencies is one thing, but when one or more family members have food allergies, preparing requires a bit more forethought. ?The nice thing is that, with the exception of tornadoes, for weather-related emergencies we usually have ample warning and time to grab a few things at the grocery store. ?First off, think about what kind of emergency are you preparing for? ?Do you anticipate being without electricity or is there the potential that your family would have to evacuate? ?Please know that I am not a disaster preparedness expert, so my list is not a complete one. ?Its just meant to get you thinking about what you might need to do to prepare in case of an emergency. ?Here's what I've come up with.

1. The Usual Stuff: ?Create an emergency kit that can be used in the event that you are without electricity for more than a few hours. ?When we built our kit, we purchased an emergency hand crank radio/flashlight combo. ?This one also has a cell phone charger which could be really helpful should the power be out for an extended about of time. (BTW, be sure your cell phones are fully charged before an expected storm reaches you.) Be sure to have a simple?first aid kit?that includes enough items for your family size. ?And of course you'll need a nice supply of flash lights and batteries. ?We try to have at least one flashlight per family member - children feel much better knowing they can carry their own flashlight around a darkened house. ?We love our?battery-operated lantern?because you can set it on a table and feel like you've got light in the room. ?Its also great cause it lets you sit around the lantern and play family board games that don't get played nearly enough. ?If you live where its cold, you'll want to collect some cozy blankets.

2. The Special Stuff:

FOOD: ?Once you've gathered some basics, you'll want to think specifically about your family. ?What will you eat and drink if the power is out? ?Realistically, most Americans would be just fine to live a day or two at home with the food they have on hand, but its nice to think ahead and be sure your family will be taken care of. ?If you are without power for more than a day, you may need to start eating from your fridge to avoid throwing out spoiled food (unless you've got a generator keeping your fridge cold). ?Stock-up on non-perishables that will be easy and safe for your family to eat. ?Try to choose items that your family will eat anyway, so that if an expected storm ends up passing by without causing much trouble, you won't have wasted money on food items you'll never use. ?Here's my short list of food items I've stock up on for this coming storm.??
- Gluten-free crackers?
?- Peanut butter?
?-?Gluten-free granola bars?
?- Gluten-free bread (I bought a loaf since I wasn't sure I'd have time to bake?homemade bread)?
?- Corn chips and salsa?
- Fruit and Veggies - Think apples, grapes and carrot sticks which require no preparation.?
?- Cook some chicken: ?I thought I'd bake a few chicken breasts and stash them in the fridge. ?We can cut them in strips and make a cold chicken strip salad for dinner - no electricity needed.??
- Canned goods such as baked beans and tuna?
- A gallon of water - We have city water and don't anticipate loosing access to water, but it just seemed like the sensible thing to do (though one gallon of water isn't going to get a family of 5 very far - ha!).?
?-?Gluten-Free Cookies?- Since this storm is about a day away, I still have time to bake a batch of cookies. ?I'm betting that will bring a smile to my kids' faces when I pull out the cookies during that family game time I'm hoping for. ?You could also buy some store-bought cookies like?Kinnikinnick sandwich cookies?(yummy!).?
MEDICATION: ?If you have family members who require medication, be sure you have enough of a supply on hand.
If you anticipate the need to evacuate, you'll need to bring along allergy-friendly foods. ?Most of the things on the above list would be great to pack in a go-bag if you think you'll need to leave your home due to a storm.
This is by no means a complete list, but hopefully it will get you started on preparing in case you loose power or have to evacuate due to weather-related emergencies. ?What other ideas do you have? ?Please share them so we can all help each other to be prepared.

Here are a few more articles to help you think about preparing for emergencies: ?Kids With Food Allergies Emergency Preparedness,?FEMA's Are You Ready Guide, and?American Red Cross Plan.

Keep Safe!

Judy Biggert Likens Gay Marriage To Plural Relationships - On Top ...

Illinois Rep. Judy Biggert on Wednesday compared gay marriage to plural relationships.

The 75-year-old Biggert was asked to expand on her response on the issue during a debate against her Democratic challenger, Bill Foster, a former congressman from Illinois.

?The gay marriage issue that came up,? a reporter asked. ?You said that you're close but you're ...?

?Well, I think that, I think that the country is close to this,? Biggert interrupted. ?But it is a state issue. We don't have polygamy and bigamy and all these things in the federal government. It's the states that take care of that.?

?But yet you're not supporting gay marriage??

?I said I'm close.?

?Well that's not supporting it though,? the reporter noted.

?No, it's not,? Biggert replied. ?I'm for civil unions and I'm looking at the prospect of what's going to happen.? (The video is embedded on this page. Visit our video library for more videos.)

Biggert is among a handful of congressional Republicans who appear to be on the verge of endorsing marriage equality. Other Representatives include Mary Bono Mack of California and Richard Hanna of New York.

Illinois approved civil unions last year and could consider legalizing marriage equality as early as December during a lame duck session.

The Justiciary

The Pantheon

Gods rule the cosmos and all that is within. As one of these elite beings how will you run the world? What will you create? (Full Up On Characters)

Owner:

Game Masters:

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?The Pantheon?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Topic Tags:

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.
I made this topic for everyone to view and absorb before I initiate my idea. Anyway allow me to explain.

This is the Justiciary!

It is an organization created and founded by Mathias. Here the first 26 Angels or Archangels as they are called formed a group that provides legal services to any and all creatures of the Middle Realm. Each Archangel or Justiciar (their title) serve as sovereign judges over 26 jurisdictions. Please be mindful, this is NOT a global government! It is merely a group of individuals presenting an invaluable service to any and all that is in need of it. Every Mortal race does have it's own form of government! But for those that could use help in the realm of Law and Order then look no further than the Justiciary!

There will be 26 trial courthouses for each jurisdiction were cases can be brought forth. There are also some multi-courthouses for those special cases that branch across different jurisdictions. Each jurisdiction is named after a letter in the Alphabet. If a court ruling was found unfavorable then present an appeal to the Justiciary then all members will review the ruling and give final judgement on whether the decision stands or is reversed. WARNING: THIS IS THE FINAL RULING! Once they've made a decision it can no longer be appealed!! Should also be known that each member is a very capable fighter but combat is usually for extreme measures.

Without further ado, here are the members! (I have yet to find pictures for all 26 but I am working hard on finding them!) (Also please note this a WIP!) (I still have much to consider but I present it for everyone to observe and comment upon.)

The First Archangel-Mathew

Image

Named after Mathias, Mathew is a devoted and sturdy leader of the Justiciary. Because of his leadership he is known as the Chief Justiciar. He is the sovereign judge of Jurisdiction A (JDA for short).

The Second Archangel-Bartholomew

Image

He is the sometimes brash and impulsive younger brother of Mathew. Despite his hot-headedness he is a brave and loyal member of the Justiciary. He is the sovereign judge of Jurisdiction B (JDB).

The Third Archangel-Adriana

Image

The vibrant and cheerful sovereign judge of Jurisdiction C (JDC). She is known to be very kind and is often eager to accept new challenges.

The Fourth Archangel-Dimitrios

Image

The even-tempered and ever loving sovereign judge of Jurisdiction D (JDD). He is calm and steady and always thinks before he acts. He never likes to do a lot of moving and prefers to stay in one spot and enjoy nature. He has an unique ability to manipulate stone and earth. This has given him the moniker The Angel of Earth.

The Fifth Archangel-Natalina

Image

The very shy and soft-spoken sovereign judge of Jurisdiction E (JDE). She is often very hard to read and prefers to keep to herself but is still a valued and trusted member in the group. She has the ability to manipulate lightning.

The Sixth Archangel-Jasper

Image

The often disinterested and rebellious sovereign judge of Jurisdiction F (JDF). Jasper can be depicted as mean and stand-offish. He doesn't care about others opinions about him and rather let his reputation do the talking. Despite having some manipulation over fire he is very cold at heart.

The Seventh Archangel-Gwendolyn

(Character info to be added later.)

The Eighth Archangel-Issac

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
