Mod Your NES Zapper Light Gun Into a 2W Laser Gun [Video]

Mod Your NES Zapper Light Gun If you have a nonworking NES Zapper and would like to bring it back to use as a project consider modding it to a USB connection or have it actuate a laser pointer as inspired by the dangerous-but-awesome laser in the video above that can set things on fire.

Makerspace North Street Labs does a lot of projects with high output lasers and decided for nostalgic reasons to replace the internals of a NES Zapper light gun with a 445nm diode, lithium batteries, a lens, standard electronics tools and wiring, and a safety switch to avoid accidental discharges. The switch is important as this powerful of a laser beam can permanently blind someone almost instantaneously.

The Zapper was disassembled, all the internals except the trigger switch were removed and replaced with the lens, diode, batteries, and thicker gauge copper wiring. The safety switch was installed at the bottom where the cord originally attached to the housing.

We really don't recommend doing this exact mod but wanted to share it as a way of seeing how you can go about retrofitting vintage gaming peripherals such as changing your Zapper to a USB gun or how you can use your Zapper as a computer mouse. That said, if you'd like to try out such a project on your on the source link below has complete step-by-step instructions and a parts list.
